One of the alternatives to the 3D printed face shield is a simple DIY foam based face shield. As 3D printers will not be available at all the places, this can serve the need too. This can be created with raw materials easily available at nearest stationery store. It needs a transparent OHP sheet, double side tape and an elastic band.

The OHP sheet will serve as the shield, there would be foam attached to the double side tape on the forehead. An elastic band will be tied from one end of the tape to the other end. The elastic band will help to hold the face shield over the face. The shield is easy to make and takes approximately 15 minutes to be assembled once we get all the required raw materials.

Contactless Hand Sanitizer

To ensure our safety, cleaning the hands is the most necessary & basic step. It has to be done at regular intervals for 20 seconds at least. WHO has also released a video showing the proper way to clean the hand in and around fingers and nails.

For this we need a sanitizer or a hand wash. Although, if our hands are not clean and we touch the containers to release soap/sanitizier, it can get infected. To avoid this, a lot of developers have created a contactless hand sanitizer / Soap Dispenser. It is one of the best open source projects available at the moment which you can develop at home as well, if you have the components and understand coding for it.

Contactless hand sanitizer consists of a sensor (IR sensor or Ultrasonic sensor) along with a servo motor (or geared DC motor in some cases) and a programming board such as arudino, Uniko Ekam etc. As soon as the sensor senses a hand in front of it, the Servo motor moves and pulls the sanitizer valve down. This releases the sanitizer or the hand wash. The user can put his hands away from the sensor so the servo moves back to home position; and the valve moves up.

The placement of the sensor can be varied as per the user. The mechanics to move the valve also can be changed. Changes are to be made as per the sanitizer container / bottle you have at your own place. Hook up the sensor, motor and a microcontroller to design one such product for your place. The sanitizers have become too essential in the fight against COVID. It is like a sword to slash away the germs from our hands. The germs can be the infectious corona virus as well, and we have to anyhow prevent ourselves from them.

The sanitizers are not only a personal utility item but it is also required in public places such as society, office, mall, supermarkets etc . 3D Printed Ventilator & Splitter

For the patients severely affected by the corona virus, they find difficulty in breathing. In hospitals, ventilators are used to supply oxygen to the patient’s lungs and remove carbon dioxide from it. This helps the patient to breathe.

The problem faced by many hospitals around the world is that there are limited numbers of ventilators compared to the number of patients. Due to the break in supply chain, it is not possible to manufacture those ventilators and make it available to the hospitals.

In time of this crisis, the 3D printing community has come up with a 3D printable ventilator. The prototypes have been tested and implemented in many countries. Not just the ventilator, the designers are also designing splitters for the ventilators. The splitters will help to support 1+ patients with a single ventilator. There are developments going in the design of 2-way, 3-way & 4-way splitters.

3D Printed Valve

3D printers are extremely useful in the battle against corona virus [CoVid]. 3D designers around the globe are trying their best to help the people as well as the government to tackle this situation. They are lending away their time to design PPE (personal protective equipment) and also few other solutions to help out in this situation.

One of the ideas that helped a lot of patients and doctors in Italy, the most affected country in European Union, was to have 3D printed valves for reanimation devices. The hospital had shortage of valves due to the broken supply chain. Massimo Temporelli, designed this valve once he was contacted.

The 3D printed valve was tested as well implemented to save many lives in North Italy. The valve can be used to support the flow of oxygen from the oxygen tanks to the patients. Check out the story here.

To get the live updates of the corona virus infected people in India, a website has been developed. This website is regularly updated by the open source community. It gives information about the whole country.

The statistics of number of people affected, recovered and dead are being displayed there. The data has been compiled from state governments. It also helps you to know about all the cases in particular states. A map has been displayed that helps you to know graphically, which state has been affected the most or least.

It also shows a graphical analysis of number of cases accumulated on daily basis as well as the cumulative figure. The good thing about this they have provided some important links regarding COVID19, helpline numbers and also they flash certain tips on how to be calm in this situation. Hands Free Door Opener

It is known Corona Virus is contagious, and physical contact can lead to the entry of corona virus into your body. Social distancing is one of the ways to keep away from physical contact with other people and one of the best ways to stay safe.

Yet, a cause of concern is that the virus can stay on certain things for a while if it was in contact with an infected person, within & outside the house. The door knob will be one of the most touched objects, especially in public places. This can increase the germ manifestation on the knob. And it increases the chance of passing the virus to other people on their hands.

An open source project in the wake of corona virus is to create a hands free door knob. The door knob will have a separate handle attached to it, which can be held by the wrist instead of the bare hand. The handle is 3D designed and can be printed locally in any 3d printer (hobby or commercial ones).

The assembly is simple and the installation is also easy. Once installed, we can fit our wrist inside the handle and push down the door knob to open the door. Since most door handles are not wide enough to be opened via elbow, this project helps in doing so.
